Prof. Adeyemo
Elebute (CON) is a retired professor of Surgery. He is the co-founder of Hygeia
Nigeria Limited, a medical organization founded in 1985, with his wife, Prof.
(Mrs) O. Elebute.
It is a thriving organization that combines medical services
(Lagoon Hospital, with branches across Lagos state) with health insurance (Hygeia
HMO). The Group also runs a foundation (Hygeia Foundation) and Hygeia Community
Health Care (HCHC), a system that offers access to affordable and good quality health services to selected
low income communities in Lagos and Kwara states.
Professor
Elebute has served in various executive and administrative offices. He was the
Chairman of World health Organization's Task Force; President of Nigeria
Medical Association (1968-1970); Member of the Scientific Council (1973-1981);
Chairman of GlaxoSmithKline Plc. in 1981. In Lagos, he became Professor of
Surgery in 1969 and was later Provost of the College of Medicine from 1977 to
1980. He served as Senior Buswell Research Fellow at the Medical Research
Council Toxicology Unit in U.K. (1975), and as Visiting Professor at University
of Arrhus, Denmark, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Manchester University,
U.K.; and he was external examiner in Surgery in several universities including
Ibadan and Ife Universities in his home country, Nigeria, University of Ghana
and Makerere University, Uganda, in other parts of Africa, Trinity College
Dublin and Manchester University in Europe.
Asides these, Prof. Elebute is a writer. He is the author of The
Life of James Pinson Labulo Davies.
